Royal Festival Hall in London: a study of architecture Hardware

Largely immune to the vagaries of fashion and architecture, the Royal Festival Hall on the south bank of London, remains without doubt one of the capitals most talked about contemporary buildings. There is no middle any trained eye or fall or faint for his unyielding stone facade. In fact, Hall is enjoying multi-million facelift, some £ 116 million have helped the 1950 treasure to retain its original luster.

The building was substantially amended in 1964 by adding the hallways and terraces to the river bank construction and more costumes in the back. Alterations to the facade facing the river removed playful Scandinavian modernism of the public face of the main building for a clearer and hard-edged style. The new building underwent a substantial renovation between 2005 and 2007, led by Allies and Morrison Architects aim to improve acoustics of the poor, access to production and the flexibility of the room and the overall quality of the material, the input space and the cafeteria and hallways designs.

Of course, the architecture on the outside do not find a receipt without problems in its early days, but can say that his main planners were claimed by the taste of the 21st century for industrial finishes. This vision of completing the thought has been complemented with the opening for the leasing of space around the room, are now the chic enclaves of cafes and bars.

However, the edge (so to speak) of the Board has always been, hands down, inside. The Most wood components that provide room completed much of its character. As an aside, the room is to become one of quiet headaches in the world of architecture Hardware, given the post-war, lack of steel when the building was finished.

It's a completely different story when it comes to the Hall doors, these metal masterpieces that are perhaps more detailed visitor noticed the building. Teachers behind the original door furniture were the architects Peter Moro and Leslie Martin. Each door handle has its own goal and the design in accordance with its predetermined role and position in the building.

However, the feat to recreate the past, renewal and replacement of this sophisticated range of inputs and outputs or nightmare is the world's finest architectural hardware or sleep, depending on your point of view. Harbrine, which won the bid to organize the project, had to literally go through 450 doors, each with its own history of the condition and repair to tell. Harry Singh Harbrine director explained that "the original plan was to reuse the hardware already in situ, perhaps after of a polish. But when we start looking closer, we saw the real picture was much more complex than broken closers, hinges worn, and locking latches irreparable damage. Basically, almost all the mechanical parts which was the need to replace.

Most parts of the doors were made of nickel silver, bronze solid brass or brass plated. In any case, it was disassembled to be relieved of half a century worth of dust and dirt. The wooden parts, meanwhile, sanded and revarnished. Where this was unrealistic, the handles had to be completely recast.

Another idea of the work that went into the renovation of this masterpiece is how they incorporated the old and new issues in the current project. Both the Disability Discrimination Act and control building and English Heritage were harmonized so that this old building does not lose its unique elegance while contemporary meeting specifications.

In conclusion, the Royal Festival Hall is an example that will study in coming years as to how a brilliant result can be obtained through close collaboration between architect and architectural hardware.
