Bewdley – A Historic Account

Bewdley is a town in the heart of the West Midlands of England. For centuries the town was a busy river port. Today the town enjoys life at a slower pace but remains faithful to its names origin 'Beau Lieu' (the Norman French term for Beautiful Place). During the busy industrial times numerous light industries used the river Severn's port in Bewdley to transport carpet, rope and twine, baskets and most notably Pewter and Brass. Today Bewdley Pewter is a sought after collector's item.

Prior to Bewdley acquiring the name 'Beau Lieu' it was part of the manor of Kidderminster along with the adjacent area of Wribbenhall which later became part of Bewdley.

In the 15th century the area was awarded borough status by King Edward the IV. This remained the case until the reorganisation of the government in 1974. The 15th century also saw the creation of the first bridge crossing the Severn in Bewdley. Prior to that profitable a ferry service was operated.

In the early part of the 16th century the town was neither part of Shropshire or Worcestershire which made it a haven for criminals fleeing wither county. In around 1539 Load Street (the main street in Bewdley) became the location for the town market. By 1544 Bewdley became part of the Worcestershire county.

Some of the buildings established in the 16th century on Load Street are still standing today. These are narrow, tall and timber framed which indicates that the land was extremely valuable at the time they were constructed.

Between 1745 and 1748 St. Anne's Church was built by Thomas Woodward. Today the church displays the town clock.

In 1768 the town was declining in importance following the creation of the Stourport canal junction. From then on the junction was used in preference to the Bewdley port.

The Bewdley bridge was constructed in 1798 by Thomas Telford. This replaced a medieval bridge which was swept away in the floods of 1795.

Before the reorganisation of government in the 1970's the town was represented in the house of parliament by their own minister. Most notably was the representative from 1907 to 1937 Stanley Baldwin who became Prime Minister in 1923. Since the reorganisation the town has been governed by three local government tiers (Bewdley Town Council, Wyre Forest District Council and Worcestershire County Council).
