Shower door hardware can be refinished?

I bought new oil rubbed bronze fittings for my bathroom. The problem is that the shower / tub doors trunks are very ugly, hardware bright brass (full sliding door, frame, handles, etc.). I swear I once saw a program of home improvement where the hardware just painted (spray paint) to refresh the image. However, when asked at the place of home improvement, tell me not to work.
