Bronze Door Knob

Experts ancient historians, others: Could this be a genuine element, 400 + years old?

We just to get through a scale that is very heavy and definitely old! My questions are: 1) Is it possible that this type of article dated engraved on it (Roman numerals)? It has four numbers and if true, is from the year to mid-1500 (of course). 2) If it is really true, is brass or brass? 3) What is the best way to know - bronze, brass? For me it is a lighter bronze weight, something like a old doorknobs, for example. 4) You pay for the item and left the store if we realize it's not really worth it, and in turn collect other items for the money already paid. Shop can not tell us the simplest thing about it because their specialty is definitely not antiques! Any help is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU! PS someone dares to say how it might be worth?

The Roman numerals could be just decorative or element can be a reproduction. Without being able to see a picture of it, I can not give much assistance. Personal opinion: If the price of the store is charging seems very reasonable, and as can not give any information about it, using their intuition in their decision. If you like how it looks and do not mind having a decorative piece that is not very old, and buy. If, as my late grandmother used to say "... Sounds too good to be true, it usually is, "probably is not old and valuable, you might want to get away from the purchase. Best wishes
