Maintaining your home security can be managed in several ways. One of these ways is to ensure that all of your doors have proper, working locks to keep potential intruders out of your home.
A home alarm system is the best way to protect your home and your family because it covers the entire house and will notify you of an intruder. However, precautions should be taken to avoid the home alarm from ever being set off. Door locks are extremely important, as doors are one of the main entrance options for intruders. There are several types of locks out there, but which one is right for your home security plan?
Keyless locks: Keyless locks are not very common on front doors of houses but may be used on apartment buildings, or within a house. They use a keypad where you enter a code. They are convenient because you do not have to worry about carrying around a key. They are an advanced option because of the technology used, and because after a certain number of incorrect tries an alarm will sound or no more tries will be permitted. This means if an intruder is trying multiple codes, they will eventually be shut out.
Entry lockset: Entry locksets are quite common. It involves two doorknobs, one on either side of the door. The one on the inside usually locks with the push of a button, and unlocks by twisting the doorknob. A key is needed to lock and unlock the outside of the door. This is not a high security lock but is still often used on back doors, as well as doors within the house. It is convenient because the door can quickly be locked from the inside without the use of a key.
Night latch: A night latch is extremely convenient because it automatically locks when you close the door. It is most effective when used in addition to a key lock.
Deadbolts: Deadbolts provide high security. When turned by a key or a thumb turn, the bolt is moved from the door into a slot in the doorframe, strengthening the whole system. Since the bolt is so secure and deep in the doorframe, prying the door open with a tool or card is more difficult, if not impossible. A deadbolt can be either single-cylinder, which uses a key on the outside and turn button on the inside, or double-cylinder, which uses a key on both the inside and outside.
Handleset: A handleset lock uses both a lockset and a deadbolt for added protection. The lockset is used on the doorknob and the deadbolt is usually installed right above the doorknob. Locking both, especially at night and when you are out of the house, provides added protection.
A home security plan is not complete without a secure lock on your door, since the door is the first point of entry to your home. A strong lock that is used properly will keep out potential intruders, protecting your home and family.
