How To Hang A Door

In this simple step by step walk through I hope to take the stress out of hanging a door, without forking out for a trained joiner to do it for you! Firstly we must ensure we have the right equipment for the job. Without doubt the most important piece when it comes to hanging a door, barring the door itself, are the hinges. It is of vital importance that you get high quality hinges as the quality of hinge will determine not only how the door will hang but also the life span of the door hung in the correct manor. Another important component of a well hung door is a highquality screw.

 

1. Don't Attach Any Door Furniture Until Your Sure Your Door Is The Right Size!!

When you have collected your equipment together then it is important you make sure the door is the right ft for the opening. Doors are available is standard size but not every opening is the same so be sure to check this before attaching any door handles or hinges. Remember almost all doors have to be trimmed to fit an opening.

 

2. Make Sure The Door Is The Right Way Around And Attach Locks!!

Before attaching any hinges to the door it is important that you ensure that the door is the right way round. As you can imagine it is very annoying and potentially damaging to the door to attach the door furniture to the door only to have to have them unattached, so get it right first time. At the top of a new door the word lock will be printed over to one side. This means that there is a section of timber fixed inside the frame of the door which is there to allow the door lock or latch to be fitted. Obviously the hinges are to be hung on the other edge. To find the lock block simply use a screwdriver to tap down the side of the door and you will hear the difference when you get to the lock block.

3. Cut The Door To Make Sure The Door Fits Inside The Door Way!!

­­This is a key part of the process and one of the most difficult for an amateur to master as there is a lot of technical sawing and drawing. You must mark the door this is the process of measuring the door frame then drawing the measurements onto the door then cutting the door to fit. Remember to cut to leave the lines!! This is critical as the saws diameter is 3mm with its teeth and the line 2mm, this may not seem much but 5mm could the difference between a good job and a shoddy job, as the door will be 5mm littler than you want and this could allow a draft to filter through.

4. Attach The Hinges To The Door!!

Firstly you must decide what hinges you want to use on the door. Typically a Butt Hinge would suffice however, you may choose to opt for a different approach and go for a Tee Hinge or maybe even a Parliament Hinge if you want something a bit fancier. It doesn't matter where you put the hinges however we would recommend that you put them seven inches from the floor and seven inches from the door frame at the top. Mark the position of the hinge by opening it at right angles and laying it on the side of the door to be hung. Mark with a pencil and then scribe the long edges with a mortice gauge if you need to. Remember the pencil line is outside the hinge so you need to cut inside this line to leave the line! Chisel out the surplus and make sure your hinge fits neatly and is not "proud" of the timber. Neither should the hinge be set too far in as this will cause the door to bind. The hinge should be set in just enough to be flush with the edge of the door. Drill pilot holesfor your hinge screws and make sure they are in the centre of the hinge holes. A screw which is against the edge of the hole will push the hinge over and out of line. Hinge screw heads that are not driven fully into the recesses will prevent the door from closing so be careful of this also.

5.Ensure The Gap Around The Door Is The Required Size and Wedge In!!

It was known for the carpenters apprentice to carry with him an old penny to ensure the gap was the perfect size and uniform. We are not proposing that you do this but it is vital that the gap is uniform and not too big an old penny width would be a good guide. Make sure you have enough depth under the door if you are going to lay a carpet later. Wedge the door in place. You may want to cut some timber wedges for this. With the door in the correct place you can mark the position of the hinges on the edge of the frame.

6.Attach Hinges To Frame And The Door Is Hung!!

Once again take the door away and using the mortice gauge which is already set to the hinge width, and the carpenters square, you can mark the full position of the hinge on the frame. This can then be chiseled out also. Wedge the door in position once again and, if you are on your own, you may find it easier to keep the top of the door in place by pinning the top hinge temporarily in place. This ensures the door does not move as you screw the hinges in. Your door should now swing easily back and forth. You may feel the need to use a door stop which can be applied at the end. When the stop is in position you can fit the door furniture you have chosen.
