lever door handles

internal metal door handles - lever type. how to clean?

hello, I thought my house lit by removing and cleaning all interior door handles. are outdated, lever type, a good heavy metal. I do not think they are brass, as they are very dark in color. How can I: 1) clean and then, could, possibly, 2) paint? a different color, and shiny? any help appreciated, thanks.

Since you are going to paint anyway: hot water with Pine Sol or SPC N Span or .... And scrub brush. After dry, apply them in a carton (cardboard tie below the screws, etc..) So that the handles are not laying down. Go to a real paint store and get a quality spray paint that is intended for metal. Spray light coat, dry, light coat of spray, dry. Perferably 3 layers as it is an object that will have a lot of use. Check with the store on a top layer if possible.
