Surprisingly, there was a time when owners could not wait to trade in its ornamental knobs for the faceless, with smooth finishes of nickel, copper and brass. The carved faces and shiny buttons of old-style glass doorknobs suddenly outmoded and thousands of door to stop the garbage from cities around the world.
