Barcelona Safety Guide - essential reading for greater security for holidays in Barcelona

Barcelona is without doubt a beautiful and exciting city be in. I lived and worked there for some time and would recommend it as a place you must visit if you have the opportunity.

All major cities have its downside, and Barcelona is no exception. There are pickpockets, swindlers, thieves bag, and others who target tourists.

So I have compiled a list of ten possible dangers that you should keep in mind.

1) The first tip is probably the most important.

Avoid advertising that you are a tourist.

Standing in the middle of the street, looking lost, with a large map up in the air is like sending a beacon Mr. Pick Pocket and you ATM is a stand empty awaiting!

Taking precautions will prevent minors get in unnecessary situations.

I would suggest that chez touriste not dress! Note what the locals are wearing and combine as much as possible. I'm not saying go out and buy a new wardrobe Catalans, but does not look like a tourist as much as possible.

If you need to refer to a map, then simply walk into a store, bank, or cafeteria and take the map around. Do not wave it in the street like a matador with his red cape!

2) Always take account of your belongings and where they are.

The Pickpockets are there, working in groups, and are fast.

I always have a secondary "in the transport portfolio. Leave all your essentials in the hotel, locked in a safe room. Leaving during the day or for dinner at night, put only the amount of cash you think you will need a "secondary" cheap wallet or purse. That way if it gets stolen have not lost everything. Also, do not carry your wallet in your back pocket. Put it in the front pocket, which is more deeper and much easier to keep an eye on.

If you carry a purse, backpack, purse or do not have it in your back or over your shoulder.

Carrying the backpack from the front and the bag under his arm. This applies especially when standing on the subway or walking down the Ramblas. I have seen the thieves on foot behind you, unzip a pocket of a backpack and take what they can get. Usually do not realize until the next time you need something from her purse. They are so good! It will also reduce your bag straps hand and grab you. Less subtle but effective!

3) Sitting out for a meal or a drink, take into account that can be approached by people selling something, or simply asking for money. Do not leave your bag where it can be easily removed or defaced. Do not leave anything of value as a camera or wallet on the table. Unless of course we do not want more!

A friend of mine was the victim of someone who went from table to table selling postcards. The letters she had taught her she put in her purse, which had foolishly left sitting on the table. When she took the card out of it just picked up the wallet that was under them.

4) If you are alone in the night walking back to his hotel, stick to the main streets are well lit. Do not attempt a shorter route by the darker side alleys.

5) The metro area is a target for pickpockets. Here operate in pairs or more.

A particular maneuver, be careful not to play as you step inside and outside the meters. One of the thieves will be in front of you, as you enter the train and one behind you. The front will bend over in front of you and block it from moving on transport. Get to the back and grab your ankles or legs. Then try to beat your hands away, and as you bend over to do his accomplice behind You will lift his wallet from his pocket. Then, just as the doors closed jump off the train at the platform, leaving you stranded on the train, unable to reach them.

6) Another fraud involves someone to address and explain that a bird has just happened is the business out the back! Then offer to help clean and suggest you take off your jacket. Pretend to clean the mess while doing it offensive and he's raising his wallet from his jacket! This really happens!

7) A Scam you can see is played regularly in Las Ramblas is one that involves a man, three cups, and a pea.

This particular game is as old as the hills and is used in the world "by fraudsters, so if you fall off it then you do not deserve any sympathy!

The main player is asking people to bet money on the location of the PEA as it moves the cups in a makeshift table. You follow their "magic" hands up close and surprisingly able to collect the cup which pea is guarded, every time.

People around you are betting to win some and lose some. We encourage you to try your luck and may well succeed with its first small bet. But as soon as they get bigger bets will be lost! People around you are also in the scam, what a shock attract someone gullible enough to try their luck. They are not making real bets. DO NOT play this game. You will lose every time.

8) Be cautious of anyone asking light a cigarette. It is safer to say no.

A potential thief is looking for a way to start some kind of interaction. I wonder where you, steer the conversation to the topic of football and before you are showing a team of Barcelona "celebration" out of you. This involves contact body along the lines of high-spirited high five, hug, and ultimately lift the wallet!

9) An area for be aware of which shows the seedier side of Barcelona is the southern end of Las Ramblas, near the monument of Christopher Columbus. At night and early hours morning this area is filled with prostitutes and drug dealers.

10) When you relax on the beach, will be aware of your belongings. If you have headphones on, fall asleep, or go swimming in the water, their possessions are increasingly vulnerable. Thieves watch out for these types of situations and take if you have the opportunity to help themselves.

So you have ten great tips to keep in mind if you are considering a visit to one of Europe the most beautiful and exciting cities. It is not my intention to scare you into thinking Barcelona is a dangerous place.

Because it is not.

However I, like all big cities, has its negative aspects, I hope I have caught his attention. It is my intention to warn against potential hazards that exist. And I hope the information that your stay in Barcelona is free to travel horror stories.
