Knobs Versus Pulls - Choosing Kitchen Cabinet Hardware

A seemingly simple decision, many homeowners are immediately overwhelmed by the number of styles, options, and finishes available for their cabinets. However, by taking the decision step-by-step, homeowners can narrow their options gradually, making this decision a bit more manageable.

The first step for homeowners is to decide whether they want knobs or pulls for their kitchen cabinets. Whichever choice homeowners make will effectively half the number of options available to them, making the remainder of the hardware choosing process infinitely easier. Knobs, as everyone knows, are usually rounded, roughly resembling a door knob. Pulls, on the other hand, resemble a handle more or less, are generally longer and thinner than knobs, and are mounted horizontally on drawers and vertically on cabinet doors.

In the past, many homeowners chose to make this decision simply based on the existing door hardware of a room. This was a decision based solely on convenience, and meant that in cases wherein a kitchen had doors, cabinet knobs were selected when those doors were outfitted with door knobs, and pulls were selected when the doors had handles. There is no set in stone rule declaring that this consistency be maintained, however, and today, most kitchens are open, meaning that there are no kitchen doors, per se.

One advantage of knobs is that they are almost unlimited with regard to stylistic options. Cabinet knobs come in almost every shape and size imaginable, and virtually any style that a homeowner can dream up can be found. Also, knobs are secured to doors in only one place, meaning that for do it yourself homeowners; they are half the work of pulls, which are secured to their doors in two places. On the other hand, for heavy drawers, knobs secured the cabinet doors at a single point can be more difficult to open, and can come loose more easily.

Pulls tend to come in fewer styles, as there seem to be finite number of shapes for door pulls. However, many homeowners feel that cabinet pulls appear more graceful and sophisticated, and pulls tend to appear more often in modern kitchens. Variations in door pulls usually come in the form of curves, rounded or square corners, and different types of back plates. Pulls are also easier to grasp, meaning that homeowners with elderly or handicapped family members sometimes prefer them to knobs, and given the fact that they attach to doors in two places, pulls make opening heavy drawers slightly easier than knobs.

While selecting one type of cabinet hardware over the other will simplify the hardware selection process, there is no rule that states that homeowner must select one over the other. Some homeowners select a mixture of pulls and knobs for kitchen cabinets, and this is a perfectly acceptable decision as well. Knobs on cabinets and pulls on drawers, or vice versa, can create a more varied look for a kitchen, allowing homeowners to select two types of cabinet hardware.
