Can I get a key made without the original key?

I have an exterior door (billiard room) that the locks, but is not currently locked (thank goodness) and I have a door key. It's like a Schlage Lock owners simply nothing too fancy. Does anyone know around how much would it cost? Will it be cheaper to buy a totally new creation? A new set will run me like $ 50 maybe a little less, but how what would be the average locksmith charge?
