What are Lock Boxes?

A lock box is a secure, convenient way to provide access to your home, office, and other locked locations to parties that know the combination.  Not requiring any special modifications to the lock and generally costing around $20, a lock box simply holds a conventional key under combination until it’s ready to be used.

Commonly used by real estate agents to secure a home for sale, lock boxes are very versatile and have uses for every homeowner. Access to keys may be required for cleaning services, babysitters, maintenance workers and others who need access to your property. In addition, lock boxes can secure boat storage units, vacation properties and allow a convenient “hide a key” system. A lock box is the most convenient and easiest way to secure your property, because it requires no special training beyond knowing the combination.

Generally constructed out of durable plastic or metal, lock boxes are designed to stand up to nearly all weather conditions.  Many even have rubber grommets installed to protect the key from exposure to moisture damage.  Some more expensive models have electronic locks, however they may be more difficult to use and prone to hardware and software malfunctions.

The most common way to mount a lock box is around the handle or knob of a door, however many can also be mounted on the wall or to a fence or other post.  Generally, handle mounted lock boxes are for temporary use, and are cheaper and easier to install. Wall mounted lock boxes are less cumbersome and more visually appealing and more suitable for permanent use.
