Will not keep your child safe

This gate is extra wide to secure large areas like a dining room. The mounts for this gate do not hold the weight of this gate or an 8 month old baby. My son has pushed on the gate and the mount was ripped from the wall leaving an unsafe gap for him to crawl through. I'm my opinion this gate was poorly designed and could really injure a child. I would not recommend this product.

Hard to install and open!

We bought this gate after moving in to our split level home...we needed a gate for two sets of steps that was extra wide. I also wanted something that would open at both ends and not have a center walk thru (like many of the other gates on the market for wide openings). It serves it's purpose in that my almost one year old daugther is safe from the steps but I must admit it is really hard to open and close on the ends. We end up climbing up and over the gate most of the time (which is probably not safe considering we are climbing down or up stairs in doing so). The other issue we had was with the installation. On the one end we have wood trim, which is perfect for this gate...on the other end is sheet rock, which it did not stay in. We ended up trying to use an achor for the screw - and it still popped out within an couple hours of the install (too much wear & tear)...right now we have a butterfly anchor in the wall but the latch turns in the wall and looks like it, too, is going to seperate from the wall. Our next step is to install a piece of trim to the drywall to install the latches to it. Either that or buy a new gate - which is more likely!

I read the reviews that this gate was flimsy, but I ignored them in favor of the folks who said they liked the gate. Big mistake! This gate is so flimsy, it broke IN the box. I love Amazon because so many products are reviewed; from now on I will trust them more.

Great for keeping my dog on the porch

This is exactly what I needed to keep my small dog on the porch. The latch is a bit confusing at first but if the bottom catch is inserted first (as the instructions say), it is easier to secure.

Does NOT work for openings less than 60"

The packaging states that it works for openings from 57" inches wide. We tried to install it on a 58" doorway. The actual gate end-to-end, with the latches on either side, actually measures 58.5". Add in the size of the bolts you have to drill in your doorway, and it's just not going to fit in any doorways smaller than 60". And the latch is nearly impossible to open. After a lot of cursing, we're sending this back and shelling out for the much nicer Dream Baby brand.

I bought this for my daycare to close off a room where i didn't want the kids to be in. It works ok. Not the best quality I was hoping for, but was way cheaper than any of the others i was looking at! So i guess for the price it is good!

We purchased this as a pet barrier to keep our female bichon/poodle from going up stairs and causing chaos. It was pretty simple to install. Just make sure to read the directions and follow closely and you will have a smooth installation. We originally had a gate that mounted with a pressure spring. It was fine but having to take it on and off was a pain. With this one we just swing it open and swing it close with no problem. Since our dog weighs only 10lb this gate is durable and sufficient from her knocking it down somehow. I am not sure how well it will hold up with a bigger dog or a toddler. Overall, I really like it since it was really cheap compared to petco and it seems well made too. Comes with screws too. I thought it would have been just the gate and hinges but it is great that they included the screws as well. Just make sure to use a plastic anchor if you are installing this on hollow drywall. I did this after a week or so of opening and closing the gate was loose. With the plastic anchors it is tight again.

It does what it says it will do, confine a young child to a safe area and keep them from areas where they might come to harm. The only reason that I gave the gate four stars instead of five is the difficulty operating the locking system when closing the gate. It is somewhat difficult to get it lined up but on the positive side, once it is latched shut it will not open even when being assaulted by a very determined would be escapee.

I love this gate. Was put up with absolute ease. It is strong and durable. My little one runs at it full force and its still there after all this time. The only problem i have with this gate is that at first it is a little fiddely to get used to opening and closing it , but with practice its not a problem anymore. We have it closing off our kitchen / front entrance area so it is in a very high traffic area but it look great. For the money I am soooooo happy as any other I looked at for the width I needed were $80 plus. Hope this review helps you :-)

I have 2 of these gates as we have 3 dogs, which we need to keep away from certain parts of the house. I have been using these gates for several years. I am guessing 7 at least. One gate enters into our kitchen so it gets a great amount of use. Finally after several years the part that connects to the wall broke. This is the locking side. I came on Amazon as I was considering buying a new gate. Instead I called the company. They are sending me the new part free of charge, and I also mentioned that my new beagle can lift up the gate and open it. She explained that there are lock clips that came with the gates. These are probably long gone as we bought these years ago and never had the need for these until now. Well she is also sending 2 locks clips to us! The product as held up well and the customer service can't be beat!

Awesome Gate!

We have had one of these gates for about twelve years now and it has withstood numerous large dogs, rug rats, toddlers, and works just as well as when it was new. It does take a little hand/eye coordination to get it to close/latch properly but with a little practice it works just fine. We liked the original so much we have just purchased another. The newer model has a little improvement over our original but is essentially the same. Extra locks and the latching bar are available from the manufacturer, North States Industries. It is made in the U.S.A. Surprise!

Just recieved this gate today. Put it up in a matter of minutes. You will need a drill or electric screwdriver, because I tried to put it up by a hand screw driver and it takes forever(but not impossible.) It isn't the best gate out there by far but it serves it purpose and is a good value for the price. I definitely would order another one if I needed a gate to fit a large opening. Yes it does stick a little and it is somewhat difficult to close with one hand. But again it IMO isn't so horrible that I would return it.

I have extra wide entrance to the kitchen and couldnt use most of what is on market. This gate fits up to 62 inches and is walk through.It is a bit stiff, but then again its new and with some patience it is just fine. Plus puppy can see me and there is not much damage she can inflict on it. For the money i give it a thumbs up.

great value, serves the purpose

I bought this gate for a wide opening to keep my toddler from going up the stairs. Installation is very easy (just 4 eye-hooks screwed into the wall), but it would have helped if they had included some drywall anchors. I had some anyways, so I didn't have to spend any extra money, but unless you're screwing the eye-hooks into solid wood, you need them. It's great that you can latch/unlatch the gate from either end, which makes quite easy to adapt to any opening and a snap to remove completely when you don't need it. Also, since it's accordion-style, it truly does fit any opening within the range, as opposed to the gates that you have to attach pieces to until it fits, and sometimes it just doesn't work at all. It does flex a bit when it's pushed, leaned on by my daughter, but certainly not enough to break. The plastic piece across the top keeps it quite secure enough for any normal use and abuse. It's tall enough, that my baby will never be able to get over it before we are able to quit using it. The open/close latch is not as easy as some, but after you do it a time or two, it's pretty easy and anyone should be able to handle it with one hand, while any typical kid of the age this should be used for should not be strong/dexterous enough to handle it. Overall, this fit my needs perfectly, and is a TERRIFIC VALUE at a fraction of the cost of much more elaborate gates.

Whoops, incompatible with baseboards/moldings without custom installation

The gate itself seems great, but upon unpacking and examining it, it is clearly designed for doorways and entryways which do not have a baseboard. The hinge mount and locking rail are full-height, and designed to be installed flush with the flooring. Installing above the baseboard will let small animals (cats, ferrets) to crawl underneath.The instructions state:"INSTALLATION OF THE CLEAR CHOICE STAIRWAY GATE WHEN MOLDING, BASEBOARDS, ETC. ARE PRESENT"Due the[sic] many variations of moldings and baseboards in today's houses, it becomes virtually impossible to manufacture a bracket to fit every situation. In an opening that has molding or baseboards, what we suggest is obtaining strips of wood from your local hardware or home center store that area as deep as the molding and as wide as the locking rail or wall hinge. You then attach these strips of wood,or "spacers," above the molding, allowing the wall hinge and locking rail to be attached as close to the floor as possible."That's kind of sad how the manufacturer lays blame for not being compatible with baseboards or moldings with "today's houses," and leaves the job of installing properly to the consumer. Pity that this was not specified in the product description. Though the product illustrations clearly show a full-height hinge and lock rail, it didn't occur to me that the manufacturer wouldn't design in some accommodation for raising them and lowering the door.This product comes with 16 screws (8 per side I presume), so you may want an assistant to help you out while you measure, mark and drill for installation. Others have noted that getting the gate to "hang right" to interface with the locking rail is difficult, so the old rule "measure twice, cut once" may apply in duplicate ... measure several times.So (in my situation) I have a choice: go get wood shims, cut and paint them to match the walls or the gate, perform a more complex installation,... or return this fine product and find one that is more compatible with the design of "today's houses."

Great for Ferrets!

My male ferret can seem to get over anything, and the female under anything. So far these gates have been the answer I was looking for. As long as I keep anything away from them that he can jump off of, he can't get over the top. Works great! I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

Nice Product but.......

The product was exaclty as advertised. What wasn't advertised was the nightmare experience one has installing it. Aligning the door to slide into the bar on the opposite wall is not possible. The company failed to respond to emails and the instructions were very generic and incomplete. Unless you like stress or are sometime with lots of time on there hands. DON'T BUY IT.

Perfect Ferret Gate

I purchased this gate for my ferrets, and it is perfect. The gate is tall, they are unable to climb it, and there are no gaps or spaces between the mounting that they can fit through. It was easy to mount, and opens easily when I need to get by. I now feel assured that my ferrets are safe when they are out playing that they will not sneak out into a room and get hurt.

Usually installation projects are a snap but this did not fit into that category. I got started and then when I realized what I was in for I quickly packaged this up and sent it back. You need to cut wood to size and then it still did not fit with my pressure mounted Kidco as I had read it would.

If you have the mindset that you dont want to drill into your wood bannister, then this is a great solution. It wraps around the bannister (square mount on the bottom and circle mount on the top) and then you can attach your gate to the wooden strip. Its very secure. My only issue is that why the heck is it so expensive!? I guess because they are the only ones making it? So price sucks because you still have to buy a full gate, so this is just additional cost for one side of the gate. If you have a wood bannister on both sides, you'll have to buy 2 of these.

Great option to drilling but HORRIBLE product description & instructions

Love that we had an option to drilling in our 2 ballisters, but first the production descrpition should clearly read that the kit in only for one ballister (maybe I missed it or maybe it just needs to be called out for moms with fuzzy brains?) We were in tghe process of installing the gate and realized we needed to order a second kit pronto, so install was delayed. Second the product instructions are horrible. We saw from other reviews that the diagrams are swapped, but there neds to be much more detail about the alignment of the connectors and screws. It took multiple tries to get it alligned, but we are so happy to know that when it comes down to take the gates down that our banister is still intact!

I ordered this gate for a friend and, shortly after ordering it, I located another wider gate and ordered that one for her. I immediately notified Amazon to cancel this order and it was shipped but returned. The other gate arrived and was not appropriate at all. My friend ended up purchasing THIS gate for more money at a local retail store. She and her husband love the gate.

Good, secure

Very secure when we attched the gate to the wall with the nails. It was for the top of the stairs so I didn't feel like just wall pressure would be safe enough. My only complaint is that the door itself is not very big. It is very hard trying to leave in the morning carrying a carseat, a diaper bag and my purse and lifting everything over the gate because it won't fit through it. Plus, it doesn't allow you to switch which side the door will swing open to. Ours has to open towards the wall which makes things even harder.

Beautiful gate, quite sturdy

This gate is beautiful. We hardware mounted one at the top of our stairs and pressure mounted a second at the bottom of the stairs. With the larger insert, it was a perfect fit for our 36 inch opening. My 2 year old cannot defeat this gate (yet!). My 6 year old can make it work with slight effort. We can open it one handed. For the price, it is so much more attractive than other gates we looked at. Plus, the 36 inch height keeps my tall kids from climbing right over. I think it will keep the dog from jumping over too, but we have not tested that out yet. I hvae only had it in place a few days, so I have no comments yet about durability.

good, reliable baby gate

I bought 2 of these gates for my sister's house, after going through 6 gates of 4 different brands with various problems. These gates have been very reliable. I used longer eye screws than were sent with it, and a couple of deck screws to mount it to the wall and they have held up beautifully though the 7 or 8 older kids who use them daily to go in and out of the living room. These kids are really hard on stuff. They break everything, but have yet to break these gates (knock on wood). The latches are metal, and are not prone to breaking like the plastic latches on some of the previous gates we've had. The wood is sturdy and sufficient for holding back my 9 month old son, as well as holding up to the neighborhood kids and his cousins! It is a little too high to step over, though, which wasn't the case with the longer gate we had for our house. It just means you have to open the gate every time you want to go from room to room, instead of being able to step over. Just stop at the hardware store and get a couple of deck screws and 2 longer eye bolts and this gate will hold up for years.

I like the gate. It easily mounts, can be limited to swinging in one direction (not over stairs), and, if necessary, is easily removed by an adult (lifts out of brackets). My 30-lb., tall toddler grandson can stand on it and the gate is solid. My cats can crawl under it for room access. My daughter and son-in-law liked it so much I purchased and installed two for their two-story home on either end of the stairs. The way it is installed also provides a lot of freedom for non-standard mounting walls (we used molly bolts in drywall, plus had to do one on an angle given where the water heater closet was located - but it functions well and looks nice). Some come out of the package difficult to unlatch. WD40 solves the problem. GREAT GATE! It's one of the few that is hardware mounted but flexible nonetheless. Amazon's price is great, but the shipping was so high (and shipping time long) it was worth purchasing the gate for $10 more from a local dealer (we needed it now).

Difficult locking mechanism...flimsy construction

We purchased 2 of these gates for the bottom and top of our stairs. This gate is flimsy and cheap. The locking mechanism aligns with an eye clip, and you have to ensure both the bottom metal hook sits into the eye clip while at the same time squeezing the top lock to open it then grasp around the top eye clip! Not an easy thing to do...it also does NOT secure the width of the gate, it has an open sliding design so if you over-slide it you're jamming the metal gate locks into the wall. My [...]was not able to squeeze the lock, and I also had a difficult time. I would NOT reccomend this gate, it's too chintzy and difficult for day to day life.

The gate was easy to install and looks fine, if a little chitzy. BUT, the latch is near impossible to do one handed, and really hard to do with two. You certainly can't do it with the light off. Sort of a drag when you have to go through it in the middle of the night. THe top and bottom each only clicks into the eye part of hook and eye set. I don't think it's that sturdy. I wouldn't recommend this gate if you have to go through it often. Lots of them are much easier.

The Adjust-A-Gate kit was promptly delivered. Instructions were easy to follow and the the kit went together with out a hitch. Powder coat paint finish was in good shape, no chips or holidays.

We have two gates to our fenced in yard, and ordered one for each. These are heavy duty supports, and will give the gate section of your fencing heft and substance. The installation is fairly easy. A couple of things that we noticed however, that might be helpful. Because of the width of our posts, and the sizing of the cross section on our fencing, we had to add the width of a 2x4 behind the cross pieces of the support, so it would line up correctly with the fence posts, where the hinges are screwed into. Another mention, is that these supports will only allow you to swing the gate inward. That's typical for a double door application, or a car entrance, but a little weird for a walk-in gate. Most of them will open out, and when you are looking for gate hardware it might be a bit of a challenge. We did find something to accomodate the issue - it's a pull down lever from the outside, that latches with a cross bolt from the inside. It's substantial and does the job, but doesn't have any aesthetic value. It's not pretty, just functional. This is a great product, just wish they could figure out a way to allow it to swing open in either direction.

I heard that these gates were the best on the market and I can safely say they are. I bought three and the first took at least 2 hours to assemble. The second and third took under 1 hour. What an excellent product, I ordered these first through Lowes and the pricing was a bit high, three gates with tax. $458 Amazon $230 including shipping, but save you self the headache Home Depot also carries this product $45 each not including tax. You can save a bundle of money and still get a quality item.

I bought 3 of these kits: one for a regular gate, one for a double-gate.The concept is great. But it won't last (unless you're in Atacama, where it rains once every few years). I noticed a small paint chip on the metal and a week later (we had some rain in the meantime) there was already some rust. I took one other gate apart after about 2 weeks and the inside of some of the pipes was already full of rust. I used some rustoleum (I got a clear spray at Home Depot) to protect the "galvanized" metal. Still shows rust.The double gate kit? It states easy as 1-2-3 with images. The problem is that there are no pre-drilled holes for the drop-rod kit, but you have to drill through the metal gate assembly yourself (of course, there's another spot for potential rust). I called the toll-free number (they have an answering machine) and when they called back they could not even tell me what drill-bit to use.
